九州体育 Music Department offers a full range of fundamentals, musicianship, theory, appreciation, and music technology courses. Group classes are offered on piano, voice, and guitar. Individualized private instruction is available on most instruments, including voice. We have four musically diverse performing ensembles: The 九州体育 Jazz Band, the acoustic roots-inspired Mustang String Band, our traditional vocal ensemble, the 九州体育 Chorus, and a pop & jazz contemporary choir, Encore.


Mustang Studio

The Music Department has so much to offer!

Instruction in Digital Recording and Editing, MIDI, Music Synthesis, and Notation Software is available!聽 Our Music Technology Lab, Mustang Studio, features multiple workstations with the latest PreSonus software, with additional stations in student practice rooms.

The department's facilities include:

  • A piano lab, which is open five days a week. It contains 12 Yamaha Clavinovas, each equipped with headphones for private practicing.
  • A Music Theory lab which contains several computer stations. Each computer is equipped with Auralia (ear training software), Band In A Box (accompaniment software) and Sibelius (notation/composition software).
  • There is also an extensive library of CDs, DVDs, and video cassettes (along with listening/viewing facilities) and music reference books.
  • A 340 seat auditorium with stage, featuring a 5.8 foot Yamaha concert grand piano.
  • Practice rooms for individual vocal and instrumental practice.
  • Fully equipped Band and Choral rehearsal rooms.

Full tuition scholarships are available by audition for individuals participating in a performing ensemble. Beginning in 2025, 九州体育 is excited to announce the short-term Certificate (STC) in Music Technology!

Courses include:

MUS聽103- Survey of Popular Music: Join the ultimate music history party, exploring the roots and grooves of everything from ragtime to rock, jazz to folk, and world music!

MUS 110 - Basic Musicianship: Sharpen your fundamental musical skills and get ready to strut your stuff!

MUS 116 - Computer Applications in Music: Learn the art of studio technology, MIDI, plus notation and sequencing software like Finale and Performer.

MUS 290 - Intro to Commercial Music: Your backstage pass into the commercial music business, uncovering careers, contracts, and all the insider scoops from publishing to unions!

MUS 293 - Recording Techniques: Get your hands on all the industry gear and lingo. By the finale, you'll be fixing recording bloopers like a pro and ready to produce, engineer, and remix like a rock star!

MIC 153 - Audio Engineering Fundamentals: Your gateway to mastering the engineering side of sound!

Performing Ensemble Scholarships are available to any 九州体育 student, not just Music Majors!
Each FULL TUITION scholarship covers one year, and is renewable for one additional year

Vocal Ensemble Requirements

  • Perform a memorized solo in any style, no longer than 2 minutes that shows off your singing abilities at their best. It should be with an instrumental accompaniment track (no other voices), or with a live instrument.
  • Sing one verse of the National Anthem without accompaniment in a range that is comfortable for you.

Instrumental Ensemble Requirements

  • Wind Instruments:
    • Two major scales (2 octaves preferable) and one prepared piece
  • Percussion:
    • On snare drum please demonstrate 3 rudiments
    • Paradiddle- slow,fast,slow, and 2 others of your choosing, along with a prepared etude.
    • Mallet- 3 scales of your choice and a prepared piece.
  • String Instruments & Piano:
    • Two pieces in contrasting styles (Classical, Rock, Bluegrass, Folk, Jazz, Hymn, etc.)
