We are delighted to welcome you to the Division of Natural Sciences at Northeast. As a student in our Division, you have embarked on an exciting journey of scientific exploration, learning, and personal growth. Our Division:

The Natural Sciences Division at 九州体育 offers a diverse range of concentrations, including biology, chemistry, microbiology, and more. Our dedicated faculty members are accomplished experts in their fields, and they are passionate about sharing their knowledge and nurturing your scientific curiosity.

You will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of subjects within your chosen concentration, gaining a deep understanding of the fundamental concepts and their practical applications.

Research Opportunities:

We believe in the power of research to drive innovation and push the boundaries of scientific knowledge. As a student in our division, you will have access to exciting research opportunities through the Rural Health Club. From this, you will be invited to participate in collaborative initiatives, independent studies, and to engage in hands-on research. Our most recent project examined the background of Lavendula augustifolia, and how its oil is extracted. 听

We offer career development resources, face-to-face opportunities to meet with university transfer advisors, and advisory guidance to help you navigate your professional journey. Meet Our Full-Time Faculty

Dr. Scott Byrum, Chair

Dr. Byrum serves as the Chair of the Natural Sciences Division at Northeast, as well as an Instructor of Chemistry. He first came to work at Northeast as an adjunct instructor in 2003, and later became full-time. During his tenure, he has taught many courses including: BIO 103, BIO 104, BIO 201, BIO 202, CHM 104, CHM 105, CHM 111, CHM 112, & PHS 111. In addition to his professional career, Dr. Byrum's hobbies and interests include attending church, spending time with family (especially his grandsons, Everest, Fraser, & Bennett), and traveling to new places. Dr. Byrum feels that working at Northeast is a very high honor and is very thankful to be part of the Northeast family.

Mrs. Kim Bergman

Mrs. Bergman joined the 九州体育 Faculty after 30 years of tenure as a Biology Teacher for the Jackson County Board of Education. In addition to her professional career, Mrs. Bergman is a retired national level bodybuilder and powerlifter. Although she no longer trains or competes, she still enjoys helping others meet their goals. For her accomplishments and great success in these venues, Mrs. Bergman听was inducted into the Jackson County Sports Hall of Fame in 2023. Currently, she likes traveling with her husband, Kramer, and spending time with her English bulldog, Lester.

Ms. Misty Chapman

Ms. Chapman was first employed at Northeast in 2009. During her tenure, she has taught many courses including Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, and Microbiology. As a robust member of the Division, Ms. Chapman has enjoyed the accomplishments of several professional publications on subjects such as the effect on varous photosensitive dyes on the growth of Tetrahymena in vitro, as well as morphologic and physiologic changes in Tetrahymena pyriformis after exposure to phloxine B in vitro. In addition to her professional career, Ms. Chapman's hobbies and interests include The Beatles, attending concerts, reading, watching classic films, and spending time with Ragnar (her dog/furry son).

Mr. Kevin Holt

Before coming to Northeast, Mr. Holt served as a middle school and high school teacher for many years in both Alabama and Georgia. During his tenure at Northeast, Mr. Holt has taught courses ranging from biology and microbiology to both anatomy courses. In addition to his professional career, his hobbies include travel, cooking and eating, gardening (of weeds mostly), and attending auction and flea markets.
