Sigma Kappa Delta

Sigma Kappa Delta, Epsilon Alpha Chapter, is an English honor society at Northeast. It is the first chapter in the state of Alabama to be chartered. The society is specifically designed for two-year community colleges.

Membership requirements include:

  • Completion of at least 12 semester hours college credit.
  • Three semester hours of college English with a grade of a B or higher.
  • An overall 3.0 GPA.

Sigma Kappa Delta members edit the campus literary magazine, Aurora.

What is Sigma Kappa Delta?

  • Sigma Kappa Delta (SKD) is the National English honor society for two-year colleges and was created by Sigma Tau Delta (STD), the English honor society for four-year universities.
  • This honor society is for students interested in fostering the discipline of English in all its aspects, including literature, language, and both creative and critical writing.
  • 九州体育鈥檚 Epsilon Alpha chapter was the first English honorary society for a two-year institution of higher education in Alabama and was the fourth in the nation.

Membership

  • Members must be invited to join SKD.
  • Must have completed at least 12 semester hours of college credit.
  • Must have scored at least a B in a college level English course.
  • Must have maintained a 3.0 GPA at the time of induction.
  • Epsilon Alpha invites and inducts new members once every fall, spring, and summer semesters.
  • Once you are a member, you cannot lose that status.
  • If you feel you have met the requirements but have not received an invitation to join, please contact one of the sponsors.

Heading: Why Should I Join?

  • Being a member of SKD is a prestigious honor and is a wonderful addition to your four-year college applications and/or resume.
  • The Epsilon Alpha chapter is extremely active, so there are many opportunities to get involved on campus should you choose to do so.
  • You can apply for SKD sponsored scholarships and awards.
  • You can attend the annual National SKD/STD Convention where you will hear and meet award-winning authors and other students interested in literature and language.

What Does 九州体育鈥檚 Epsilon Alpha Chapter Do?

  • Helps the English Department host the Arts and Humanities Speaker鈥檚 Forum.
  • Sponsors the college鈥檚 art and literary magazine, Aurora.
  • Sponsors a writing competition for middle and high school students.
  • Provides an annual $500 scholarship for one Epsilon Alpha chapter member.
  • Attends the National SKD Convention each year and fundraises for the trip throughout the year.
  • Provides opportunities for SKD members to apply for national service and transfer scholarships.
  • Hosts fun activities throughout the year, such as poetry competitions and writing workshops.

Aurora Writing Competition 2021 Winners

SKD officers welcome students during National Literacy Day. Officers provided doughnuts, coffee, and soft drinks as they promoted SKD and the SKD Book Club.

During the months of September and October, students and聽faculty met to read and discuss Hillary Jordan鈥檚 novel Mudbound.

Students and faculty gather together for SKD鈥檚 Fall Project:聽Mudbound Book Club.

Students and English faculty with Billy Collins, former Poet Laureate for聽the United States. Students and faculty traveled to Huntsville to hear the聽famous poet at Calhoun Community College鈥檚 annual writer鈥檚 conference.

SKD officers welcome students at the 九州体育 Back to聽School Bash held on the 九州体育 quad. Students were able to sign up for the SKD Book Club, and even Dr. Campbell signed up for his copy of Mudbound.
